Aims
Our broad aims are to preserve, conserve and enhance the character of the built environment of Abingdon. The society was established in 1944 and helped rescue some of the still extant vestiges of the great Benedictine Abbey of St Mary and associated buildings, many of which were derelict and in danger of either collapse or demolition. The Society now maintains these, many of which are scheduled ancient monuments. They include the Unicorn Theatre, a vibrant centre of cultural activities in Abingdon, and the Long Gallery, a superb venue for weddings and parties. Abingdon's annual Craft Fair also makes a valuable contribution to the funding required to maintain the buildings. In addition, the Friends of Abingdon perform a formal function as a community watchdog vetting and responding to planning applications throughout the local area, and mounting or co-operating on projects of concern in Abingdon. The Friends of Abingdon are a registered charity, number 25580.
